OpenAI’s ChatGPT Reinstated After Brief Outage Affecting Users

After re-establishing service after about 30 minutes, Microsoft-backed OpenAI recently resolved an outage affecting thousands of ChatGPT users. With lingering matters for a few users persisting until around 5 p.m. (0100 GMT Saturday), OpenAI declared on Friday that ChatGPT access was reinstated for most users by 4:34 p.m. PT (0034 GMT Saturday).
Showing both frustration and determination, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the brief disruption in a post on X. Reflecting the company’s commitment to further enhancing ChatGPT’s uptime and dependability; he expressed, “We are much, much better at reliability than we used to be, but clearly more work in front of us,” accompanied by a frown emoji.
Illustrating the scale and popularity of the AI chatbot, the outage, tracked by Downdetector.com, temporarily influenced over 19,000 users. With approximately 250 million active users each week since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has quickly attained a substantial user base.
Up from $14 billion in 2021, the rapid growth has led to a significant increase in OpenAI’s valuation, which rose to $157 billion in just two years. Reaching $3.6 billion, a remarkable achievement given that OpenAI had no revenue just a few years prior, the company’s annual revenue has also grown dramatically.
Underscoring its commitment to serving a large and diverse user base, OpenAI’s swift responded to service disruptions and the ongoing improvements in ChatGPT’s reliability.
